Il fut le fils cadet du comte Berthold III et de sa seconde épouse Luitgarde, la fille du roi Sven III de Danemark.
1237-1242, fut évêque de Bamberg en Franconie.

1242, il fut accusé et reconnu coupable par le tribunal de la Cour de justice de rupture du serment d'allégeance, de défection de l'empereur Frédéric II et de dilapider les biens diocésains.
