ملاحظات
John Rogers, also known as "Trader John," and "Hell Fire Jack" first came to the Colonies to fight in the French and Indian war. He was later made a Tory Captain during the American Revolution. Following the war he remained among the Cherokee, becoming an Indian Trader and prominent land owner. He married 3 times, all of the Cherokee nation.
A man of considerable influence among the Native Tribes, he often served a delegate to Washington, D.Cthere are many letters, written by him to the government. He once paid the ransom, demanded for a young boy named Jennings and returned him to his family. He was made famous by the Moravian Missionaries as a man who liked to throw lavish Christmas parties. “The guest consumed a number of beeves (beef), two barrels of flour, and two barrels of rum. Over two hundred guest was present.”
His home was described as magnificent, “almost a palace” with large porticos. His yards were tended by black slaves. Another book describes Roger’s home as a large log house with a covered porch or veranda.
The Doublehead Incident
In 1807, Cherokee chief Doublehead sold tribal land to the white government, signed treaties with them, and accepted land from them. Trader John believed these activities were detrimental the the welfare of the people, and confronted Doublehead about this. Doublehead said to the white man, "You live by sufferance among us. I never see you in Council or on the warpath. You have no place among the chiefs. Hush and interfere with me no more." Doublehead was later tracked by Trader John and two men named Ridge and Hicks. Following a fight, he was tracked down by John and co and executed.
